CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Think of the conversations we would be having today if the Browns were the team giving up on Sam Darnold after making him the top pick in the 2018 draft. Instead, the Jets are the team who took Darnold No. 3 -- the second quarterback taken in the draft -- and traded him Monday for a package highlighted by a second-round pick next year.
Whether it was Darnold, a candidate for the Browns at No. 1, or the Jets at fault is something we’ll find out soon enough, but it’s a sign of the times that it’s some other team moving on so quickly from a highly-drafted quarterback while the Browns could decide to extend Mayfield this offseason. Even if they don’t, Mayfield will be the team’s Week 1 starter for the third straight season and will make his 46th consecutive regular season start when the Browns open their season -- oh, and he’s started two playoff games.
You could argue the Browns, in hindsight, should have taken Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson at the top of the draft, but you could also argue the instability around the franchise would have been disastrous for either quarterback who landed in ideal situations, just like Mayfield did, even if it took a few seasons to figure it out.
