Football

Just like in the AP Poll, Florida State slipped one spot in the latest edition of the College Football Rankings to No. 5 behind the Washington Huskies. Committee chair Boo Coorigan said that the switch was about what Washington has done rather than docking FSU’s standing because of Jordan Travis’ injury and...honestly, it checks out.

Florida State will have its chance to prove itself at Florida and then vs. No. 10 Louisville for the ACC Championship. Michigan and Ohio State play each other and Washington gets Oregon again so FSU is prime position to take care of business and still get in.

Even if the Seminoles finish 13-0, there will be a chorus of folks who think they don’t belong because they play in the ACC or because they’ve played too many close games or, most significantly now, because they don’t have their starting QB.

Of course, it’s also worth noting that Stetson Bennett wasn’t Georgia’s top quarterback option in 2021. Nor was Jake Fromm when the Bulldogs made it to the national title game in 2017. That 2017 game was won by a QB coming off the bench (Tua Tagovailoa). Trevor Lawrence wasn’t Clemson’s starter for the first four weeks of 2018 when the Tigers won it all. Max Duggan lost the starting QB job for TCU coming out of fall camp last year, but he still led the Horned Frogs to the title game. And, of course, there’s Cardale Jones, who came to Ohio State’s rescue in 2014 and won the Buckeyes a national title.

Now, no one is confusing Tate Rodemaker with Tagovailoa or Lawrence, but is there any proof he can’t play at least as well as Jones, Bennett or Duggan? And the point here isn’t that anything is guaranteed for FSU post-Travis, but the history of No. 2 (or No. 3) QBs in September making noise in January is actually a lot more extensive than most folks remember.

So yes, Washington is deserving. So, too, is Florida State — with or without Travis. And if the Noles win the next two against Florida and Louisville, there shouldn’t be a second’s worth of debate. They’re in.

A well-deserved honor — Jordan Travis was named one of 10 semifinalists for the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award:

Travis, a redshirt senior from West Palm Beach, was previously named a Maxwell Award and Davey O’Brien Award semifinalist. Travis is Florida State’s all-time leader in total offense and touchdowns responsible for, records he achieved earlier this year. Travis has accounted for 27 total touchdowns and just two turnovers in 11 games this year.

Travis has led the Seminoles to 17 consecutive wins, tied for the second-longest winning streak in FSU history and the third-longest winning streak in ACC history. Behind Travis, Florida State is 11-0 overall and completed ACC play a perfect 8-0 for the 10th time overall and the first time since 2014.

A three-time ACC Quarterback of the Week, Travis threw a touchdown in 22 consecutive games – the longest streak for a Seminole since 2013 Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston – and accounted for multiple touchdowns in 16 straight games, a school record and the second-longest streak in the ACC over the last 20 seasons.

Travis is the only player in the country with at least seven rushing touchdowns each of the past four seasons.

Travis had a stretch of 184 pass attempts without an interception, the fifth-longest streak in program history and 13th-longest in ACC history.

Travis began the season with a career-high four touchdown passes and a fifth touchdown on the ground in FSU’s 45-24 win over No. 5 LSU. In the second half against the Tigers, Travis had a QBR of 99.9, the highest rating in a half by any quarterback nationally against a ranked opponent since Winston in 2013.

On top of FSU’s career touchdown and total offense records, Travis is No. 2 at FSU in his career with 65 passing touchdowns, 8,644 passing yards and 28 wins as the starting quarterback. Travis is No. 3 with 633 completions and a 62.5 completion percentage. He also is No. 4 on the program’s career list with 31 rushing touchdowns.

FSU men’s basketball earned its first ranked win of the season on Tuesday, taking down the No. 18 Colorado Buffaloes in overtime to bring home the Sunshine Slam championship from Daytona Beach.

FSU women’s hoops is in Las Vegas for the Ball Dawgs Classic, facing off against Northwestern today at 2 p.m. ET:

The winner of the FSU-Northwestern game will battle No. 4 Stanford or Belmont on Friday at 11:45 p.m. ET/8:45 p.m. PT. The losers of the two games will play at 9:30 p.m. ET/6:30 p.m. PT on Friday.

The Seminoles (4-0) and Wildcats (3-1) play for the first time in series history. It is FSU’s only scheduled Big Ten opponent this season.

Junior forward Makayla Timpson recorded her second consecutive double-double and 15th of her career in FSU’s 80-45 win over South Alabama on Sunday. Timpson recorded 17 points with 11 rebounds and four blocks. Her 15 career double-doubles tie current head coach Brooke Wyckoff for the 17th most in program history.

The Seminoles have been impressive from the free throw line through four games this season, shooting 82.5 percent (66-of-80) so far. FSU went 12-of-13 from the charity stripe in its last game vs. South Alabama.

Junior guard O’Mariah Gordon has totaled 16 assists to just three turnovers in nearly 119 minutes played this season. Her 5.3 assist/turnover ratio ranks 14th nationally and second in the ACC.

The Seminoles rank second in the ACC and 20th in the country in scoring offense at 87.5 points per game.

Sophomore guard Ta’Niya Latson leads the Seminoles averaging 20.3 points per game. She already owns a signature performance this season with a career-high 35 point outing in a 79-75 comeback win at rival Florida. In that fourth quarter, Latson scored 17 points, went 5-of-5 from the field and 7-of-7 from the free throw line.

Florida State’s 11 turnovers per game rank as the 11th-best average in the nation. FSU has had more assists (58) to turnovers (44) in all four games played this season.

Soccer

As Florida State soccer preps for a match vs. Pitt with a trip to the College Cup on the line, the Seminoles received some major news on Tuesday with the announcement that an ACC-leading seven athletes were named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team — Lauren Flynn, Heather Gilchrist, Leilanni Nesbeth, Sophia Nguyen, Beata Olsson, Cristina Roque and Kaitlyn Zipay.
