Liverpool vs Manchester United team news: Gakpo returns for hosts, Varane and Rashford back for visitors - The Athletic

Cody Gakpo has been restored to the Liverpool starting XI for the visit of Manchester United to Anfield, with Diogo Jota dropping out.

Jota started and assisted during Wednesday’s 2-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers but has only just come back from several months out injured.

Roberto Firmino, who will leave Liverpool on a free transfer at the end of the season after eight years with the club, is again named on the substitutes’ bench.

United manager Erik ten Hag, meanwhile, has restored many of his first-team regulars after rotating during the midweek FA Cup fifth-round win over West Ham United.

Only four outfielders that started the 3-1 victory at Old Trafford are again in the line-up today; Diogo Dalot, Bruno Fernandes, Antony and Wout Weghorst.

Ten Hag’s side start the game 10 points ahead of their hosts and hoping to strengthen their grip on third place after Tottenham and Newcastle were beaten on Saturday.

But Jurgen Klopp’s side have rallied in recent weeks, taking 10 points from their past four league matches after earning just one point in the four preceding games.

Andy Madeley takes charge of the game at Anfield.
