College football scores, schedule, games today: West Virginia vs. Pitt kicks off Thursday's Week 1 action - CBS Sports

College football fans yearning for the full slate of Week 1 action get the luxury of an early start with 16 games on Thursday night leading up to the season's first full Saturday of games. Though just six of Thursday's contests pit Football Bowl Subdivision teams against each other, there will be three ranked teams among those in action.

First up is a renewal of the Backyard Brawl, as No. 17 Pitt and West Virginia play for the first time since 2011 in what could be a closely contested rivalry showdown. Kicking off at the same time is No. 12 Oklahoma State, which will be out to avenge a 2016 home loss to Central Michigan. No. 22 Wake Forest rounds out the ranked squads playing Thursday, with the Demon Deacons hosting VMI with Mitch Griffis filling in at quarterback while star QB Sam Hartman awaits medical clearance.

Outside the top 25, Penn State and Purdue tangle in a Big Ten showdown and Minnesota takes on its former coach, Jerry Kill, who is now leading New Mexico State. CBS Sports will be here every step of the way to update you with the latest scores, highlights and storylines throughout the evening. All times Eastern
