Quinn Ewers’ time at Ohio State is over.
Sources told Yahoo Sports on Friday that Ewers has informed Buckeyes officials that he intends to enter the NCAA transfer portal. Ewers is expected to consider Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech for his next school, sources told Yahoo Sports.
Ewers enrolled early at Ohio State and became an unintentional trailblazer. He made well over $1 million in name, image and likeness money by leaving high school early and signing deals, which included memorabilia and a kombucha company.
Ewers had been the top-ranked quarterback in the class of 2022, starring for Southlake Carroll, a powerhouse in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. He re-classified and became the top quarterback in 2021.
Ewers arrived at Ohio State in August, about three-quarters of the way through training camp. He made little impact on the season, as he enrolled with the expectation that 2021 would be a redshirt season.
Ewers took two snaps for the Buckeyes this season.
He arrived at Ohio State with a lot of fanfare, as his decision to enroll early rocked two venerable institutions – Texas high school football and Ohio State football.
Part of Ewers’ decision was tied to the ability to make money off his NIL. He could not do that while in high school in Texas, as a state law prohibited it. That prompted the Ewers family to ponder going to college early.
When an appeal to the University Interscholastic League was denied due to state law, Ewers moved up the timeline to attend Ohio State. He’d been committed in the class of 2022, and he skipped his senior year to enroll in the summer instead of January.
“We didn’t ask for this situation, but it’s upon us,” Curtis Ewers, Quinn’s father, told Yahoo Sports this past summer. “It’s our reality. We don’t want Quinn to be a martyr here for everyone who comes behind him. But right now, we are guided by what’s the best for Quinn.”
And for now, that’s heading home to Texas. Expect Ewers’ upcoming decision to reverberate throughout the state. Ewers has such magnetism in Texas that he’s expected to attempt to recruit other top players to follow him to his destination. And that could prompt him to decide on an expedited timetable, as signing day is Dec. 15.
