Orange Bowl tickets: Prices soar on secondary market for Michigan-Georgia playoff matchup - mlive.com

Michigan fans are excited about the school’s first College Football Playoff appearance. The school has sold out its allotment of tickets for the semifinal matchup against Georgia in the Orange Bowl on Dec. 31.

Those who requested tickets through Michigan and were denied received an email that read, in part, “Due to incredibly high demand we were only able to fulfill requests for those with at least 250 priority points. We received over 28,000 requests for 12,500 tickets.”

Michigan’s points structure is based on several criteria, with fans accumulating points for things like purchasing season tickets and being an alumni.

The athletic department’s email directed fans to the Orange Bowl website to buy tickets. That site redirects fans to Ticketmaster, a secondary market on which the least expensive ticket, as of Monday morning, was $713. That seat was in the last row of the corner of Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.

On SeatGeek, the cheapest available ticket is $597. Tickets for the other playoff semifinal, between Alabama and Cincinnati, are available for $113. On StubHub, the cheapest ticket is $615.

The high demand for the Orange Bowl is unsurprising. Michigan, the No. 2 seed, enters the game 12-1 after beating Iowa on Saturday night for the Big Ten championship, the program’s first in the divisional era and first of any kind since 2004. The playoff has been around since 2014, and the Wolverines have never participated.

Georgia, the No. 3 seed, has been to playoff once before, in 2017, but this is considered the program’s best teams of all time. The Bulldogs have not appeared in the Orange Bowl since 1959. Michigan played there at the end of the 2016 season.

This year’s Orange Bowl matchup is set to start at 7:30 p.m. ET on New Year’s Eve.
