IN CASE YOU MISSED IT
Five must-reads before kickoff:
* Last year at this time, both of these programs were slogging through two-win campaigns and were non-factors in the national scene. A year later, both have made dramatic turnarounds to be undefeated and in the top 10 through seven games. We take a closer look at the different ways the two programs authored similar comeback seasons.
* On defense, Michigan State is preparing for two at every key position: two running backs in Blake Corum and Hassan Haskins and two quarterbacks in Cade McNamara and J.J. McCarthy. Knowing who’s in the game at all moments will be key for the Spartans’ defense, Mel Tucker said.
* For Michigan’s defense, one name stands above the rest in terms of who to prepare for: Kenneth Walker III, the nation’s leader in rushing yards per game, who Jim Harbaugh calls “a fine back” for his combination of speed, size and vision.
* Last fall, Aidan Hutchinson and Ben VanSumeren were roommates and members of Michigan’s football team. But they’re not talking much these days, after VanSumeren entered the transfer portal in February and made the rare switch between the two rival schools. On Saturday, the two will be suiting up for rival defenses.
