Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, a Grayson Allen look-alike who once played a game of one-on-one against Jimmy Kimmel for two hours, has waded into the NBA's COVID-19 vaccination status discourse.
In a Wednesday Twitter thread, the Republican senator — who is vaccinated himself — tweeted that he "stands with" a spate of reportedly unvaccinated NBA players, including Golden State Warriors forward Andrew Wiggins. For good measure, the senator added the hashtag, "#YourBodyYourChoice," seemingly a bit of trolling given his anti-abortion views.
Cruz went on to quote Los Angles Lakers forward LeBron James — also vaccinated — who said he was initially skeptical of receiving the vaccine.
“We’re talking about people’s bodies and well-being. I don’t think I personally should get involved in what other people should do for their bodies and livelihoods," Cruz quoted James as saying.
The quote is accurate, but James went on to say, "I know that I was very [skeptical] about it all but after doing my research, I felt like it was best suited for not only me but for my family and my friends."
"@KingJames is being courageous here," Cruz wrote. "With his box-office power, he could be even more courageous—he could SOLVE the problem—by saying: 'I stand w/ my fellow players. And I won’t play in any arena that bans another NBA player because they make a personal healthcare choice.'"
Under the San Francisco Department of Public Health's current order, Wiggins must get vaccinated in order to play home games at the Chase Center this season.
The Lakers, meanwhile, are reportedly 100% vaccinated in large part so they aren't at a competitive disadvantage. There is no chance James — who has a questionable boycotting record in general — voluntarily sits out Warriors road games in solidarity with Wiggins and Cruz.
