Two thumbs down.
Javy Baez kept it real with the media after the Mets’ win on Sunday. He essentially told Mets fans to stop booing their own players, and that the boos are what led to the thumbs-down “celebration” that he, Francisco Lindor and Kevin Pillar have been seen doing after getting hits. There have been so few of those hits that you may have not even noticed it. If it were thumbs down for strikeouts, you would see it multiple times every night.
Baez is not wrong when he says fans should not be booing their own players. Although, it is a smaller portion of fans that do the booing, not a larger portion. The problem is that the fans who pay to be there can do what they want. Baez has been a Met for a few weeks, and the team had a pathetic month of August that had them go from four games up in the NL East to 7.5 games back. The new ownership has not changed much, and the franchise has not won a World Series in 35 years. This is a frustrated fan base.
We have lots to say about it on the latest episode of the “Amazin’ But True” podcast with myself and former Met Nelson Figueroa, featuring a chat with The Post’s Mike Puma.
Amazin’ But True Podcast with Jake & Figgie:
- BAEZ REACTION: This is a terrible look for Baez, especially coming after the Mets finally win a series. You don’t want the fans turning against you, and now that has happened. The way to fix this would be to have a September to remember and help get the Mets to the playoffs, which is going to be wildly difficult with the deficit they are facing. You need a thick skin to play in NY, and maybe he does not have it. Hard to see the situation now where Mets re-sign Baez. Everything seems to go wrong with the Mets and their fans. Figgie compares to the other side when the Yankees made the thumbs-down thing a rallying cry, and it worked.
- SANDY’S STATEMENT/COHEN’S TWEET: Sandy’s statement is trying to save face so fans will show up. Mets need to hold guys accountable. Steve Cohen needs to clean house after the season. Replace Sandy, replace Luis Rojas, replace Zack Scott and make some big changes to some of the roster.
- FAN VOICEMAILS: Two fans call in to react to the latest Mets saga.

NY Post Mets beat writer
- SURPRISE: Everyone in postgame was shocked that Baez said what he did. Mets will need to play better to get rid of the boos. Believes Sandy did the right thing.
- CHANGES: Puma believes there will be significant changes this offseason.
- NO LEADER: Who is the Mets’ veteran leader? They don’t really have one.
