Durham, N.C. — Duke coach Mike Kryzyewski will get his farewell tour. Many argue 'Coach K' deserves it after a litany of accomplishments at Duke, where he molded the Blue Devils into college basketball's premier team.
On Wednesday, the legendary men's basketball coach announced he will retire after the upcoming 2021-2022 season, which will be his 42nd in Durham.
Kryzyewski will speak with the media at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Thursday, detailing his decision to retire on the court which bears his name.
On Thursday morning, balloons with 'happy retirement,' 'thank you' and 'we love you' messages were spotted at 'Krzyzewskiville' on Duke's campus outside the stadium.
"Duke is Coach K and Coach K is Duke," said Duke student Tarun Amasa.
Kryzyewski led Duke to five national championships and USA basketball to three gold medals. Elected into the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006, Kryzyewski is the winningest coach in college basketball history.
He will be succeeded by Jon Scheyer, who won a national title as a Duke player in 2010 and joined the coaching staff in 2013. Scheyer will talk about his promotion on Friday.
The decision comes almost exactly two months after UNC coach Roy Williams, also a College Basketball Hall of Famer and winner of multiple national championships, announced he was retiring.
"Mike's been fantastic for the game of basketball," Williams said. "He's been fantastic for college basketball and fantastic for the ACC, the greatest rivalry in sports, Duke and North Carolina basketball."
"He's been a good friend. He's been a guy I've respected a great deal. He made everybody bring their A game for years and years and years."
Kryzyewski will speak at 11:30 a.m. His appearance will be carried live on WRAL, WRAL.com, and the WRAL News App.
