For the Angels to even sign him was a massive surprise, a swing from an owner giddy and willing to spend on a star who had put together one of the best 11-year stretches baseball has ever seen in St. Louis. In the years that followed, Moreno praised the signing of Pujols and what it signified for his franchise, one that has doled out as many $200 million-plus contracts as any in the game. But Pujols’ performances in Anaheim never even came close to the excellence that marked his historic Cardinals tenure.
