The 2021 NFL Draft is set to begin on April 29. The San Francisco 49ers hold the third overall selection, and it’s no secret that they will be taking a quarterback. The question on everyone's mind is which signal-caller it will be.
We know it will likely be either Justin Fields, Mac Jones or Trey Lance. Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch will be at Lance’s second pro day on Monday and will get an up-close look at the North Dakota State product.
Fields threw in front of the Niners head coach and GM last week, and by all accounts, he made a good impression. But, one NFL insider and former general manager isn’t sold on the idea of San Francisco taking the Ohio State QB with the No. 3 pick.
The Athletic’s Michael Lombardi was on SiriusXM’s The Wrap with Patrick Meagher and was asked who he thinks the 49ers will take with the third selection.
“Justin Fields is not gonna go No. 3. That’s what I’ve heard,” Lombardi said. “I love the people on Twitter who are like weathermen. Seriously, where are you getting your information? You’ve got better sources than me? Good luck. I’m just telling you — if it’s not Mac Jones, it’s Trey Lance.”
Most draft pundits have the Niners taking Jones in their mock drafts, but nothing is set in stone. Lance is more of a project who has all of the physical tools to be a successful NFL quarterback.
Lombardi previously stated that Shanahan would make the final call on which quarterback the 49ers will take. Fields was extremely accurate during his collegiate career, and SI’s Albert Breer says he impressed the Niners during his second pro day last week.
Shanahan and Lynch have done a great job of not leaking any information out to the public. We have seen some of the most well-plugged-in media members — such as Adam Schefter and Peter King — admit that they’re guessing when they say they think the 49ers will select Jones.
We have seen conflicting reports about who the Niners are leaning towards since the trade happened. Some analysts believe Jones will be the pick, while others have scoffed at the idea that San Francisco would give up the assets it did to pick a prospect like Jones, who looks to have a lower ceiling than Fields or Lance.
The good news is that we don’t have to wait much longer to see who the 49ers pick to be their QB of the future. It seems like the entire NFL world is focused on what San Francisco will do at No. 3, so we have seen a ton of differing opinions on Fields, Lance and Jones.
The draft is coming up on April 29, which is when we will finally get our answer.
