NFL Trade rumors: Expect multiple teams to inquire today about a potential deal for Jimmy Garoppolo - Niners Nation

Oh, how things can change in a month. Remember this?

This was the message we received all off-season. Even after the 49ers traded multiple first-round picks and a third-rounder, even some local media insisted that Jimmy Garoppolo wasn’t going anywhere.

Jimmy G’s clock ran out a while ago, but once the team executed the trade, that was them pulling the plug on this experiment. Quarterbacks who get drafted No. 3 overall don’t sit. Teams who give up that type of draft capital to move up in a draft aren’t selecting a player who they think needs seasoning and sitting a year to learn.

The Alex Smith/Patrick Mahomes comparisons were always off as Alex was never hurt.

Fast forward just over a month, and now the tweets are reading like this:

“Barring any doomsday scenarios, it’s fair to say Garoppolo’s future with the 49ers is up in the air.”

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport added, “the 49ers do not have plans to trade Jimmy G unless the value overwhelms them. Seems pretty unlikely, but crazier things have happened.”

What Schefter, Pelissero, and Rapoport’s tweets might as well say is the 49ers likely have a deal in place with the Patriots but are looking to see if any other teams will pay more than what is already on the table. Aka, “Belichick is low-balling us, and we want more.”

The multiple teams part is interesting. New England makes sense. After them, you have Washington, Chicago, and then you start to get into teams who could use a quarterback but not as bad such as Pittsburgh and New Orleans.

The other kicker is Garoppolo’s no-trade clause. Jimmy could turn down any potential trade to a destination he doesn’t desire. It could be due to him not wanting to play for a specific team or because Garoppolo doesn’t want to restructure his contract.

I doubt Jimmy G would turn down any trade as San Francisco could release him and wind up saving about $21 million in cap savings. That’s another part about Garoppolo returning next season that came up, but not nearly enough.

Jimmy was never coming back as the organization could use the money they save on him and roll it over into next year. Sure, San, the 49ers could make a run at Julio Jones or Stephon Gilmore, or another big name that is available.

The most likely option would be keeping the money they save and roll that into next season as the Niners would have another offseason where they’ll decide on if they want to sign a bunch of free agents to a one-year deal for the second year in a row.

A trade is coming. The only question left is will the 49ers get the value they initially hoped. If they’re making one last-minute effort to up the ante on a deal, my guess would be no.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
