Jimmy Garoppolo was once the heir apparent. The young buck in the quarterback room getting the side-eye from the veteran he was there to replace. Garoppolo knows firsthand the awkwardness of that relationship when you can hear what’s not being said and feel what’s not being expressed.

Now Garoppolo is the OG. This is his chance to delay the inevitable, if the 49ers indeed bring him back as their franchise quarterback for another year after Friday’s trade that saw them move up nine spots in April’s draft, likely to draft a quarterback of the future.

This could’ve gone way worse for Garoppolo. At times it looked like it was going to.
