49ers news and rumors: San Fran discussed trading up with the Bengals - Cincy Jungle

In case you missed it, the San Francisco 49ers just shook up the 2021 NFL Draft with a deal that now has them picking in the top five.

In a blockbuster trade with the Miami Dolphins, San Fran managed to acquire the third-overall pick, where it looks like they’ll take a quarterback to eventually replace Jimmy Garoppolo.

As it turns out, the 49ers actually called the Cincinnati Bengals about acquiring the fifth pick, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Because the Dolphins’ pick was only two spots higher, it’s reasonable to think the trade haul they got wouldn’t have been much different than what Cincinnati was offered.

For a refresher, the 49ers sent the 12th pick and the 102nd pick in this year’s draft, along with their first-round picks in 2022 and 2023 to the Dolphins in exchange for the third-overall pick.

But that wasn’t all. Shortly after that deal was made, the Dolphins traded the 12th pick and 123rd pick in this year’s draft, along with their newly-acquired 2022 first-round pick, to the Philadelphia Eagles for the sixth-overall pick and the 156th pick.

So had the 49ers traded up to the fifth pick, the Bengals probably get a similar package that includes the 12th pick and at least one more future first-round pick, as well as another late-round pick or two this year.

That certainly sounds like an enticing offer, but I’m still on the bandwagon of getting any one of Ja’Marr Chase/Penei Sewell/Kyle Pitts will be a home run that will take a lot to pass on since it’s unlikely any of them make it to the 12th pick.

Saying this, do you think the Bengals were wise to stand pat, or should they have entertained that kind of offer? Let us know in the comments section, and have a great weekend fam.
