49ers brass attending Mac Jones' workout after blockbuster trade - New York Post

When the 49ers traded up from the No. 12 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft to No. 3, it all but assured they would take a quarterback with the pick. The question is, which quarterback will it be?

On Monday, the team may have dropped a major hint. Alabama’s Mac Jones and Ohio State’s Justin Fields, both QBs expected to go near the top of the draft, have workouts scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. According to a report from Peter King, San Francisco’s GM and head coach, John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan, will attend Jones’ workout instead of Fields’.

Jones threw last week when Alabama had its first Pro Day, and will do so again at its second — which will also feature star running back Najee Harris — in front of Shanahan and Lynch. Their assistant GM, Adam Peters, will go to Columbus to watch Fields throw.

It could signal the 49ers have made up their mind with the quarterback they want to take. Jones wasn’t expected to be a top-three pick, but he has been rising up draft boards throughout the offseason.

It could also signal that they have more questions about Jones’ athletic ability than that of Fields. The knock on Jones has been his lack of mobility and arm strength, while Fields’ athletic ability is a sure thing.

North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance is also a possibility, and has been mocked to San Francisco by a number of analysts, so it could just be a smokescreen after all.
