Ben Simmons tells 76ers he wants trade, will not attend training camp, per report - CBS Sports

The Ben Simmons situation in Philadelphia has reached an official breaking point. Simmons recently told the 76ers that he wants a trade and will not report to training camp, according to Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer

In a meeting with the 76ers last week in Los Angeles, Simmons told team co-managing partner Josh Harris, president of basketball operations Daryl Morey, general manager Elton Brand and coach Doc Rivers that he no longer wants to remain a Sixer, according to multiple sources.

Sources said the three-time All-Star also does not intend to report to training camp.

A team spokesman declined to comment.

Simmons' future with the team has been in serious doubt ever since the Sixers collapsed in the second round of the 2021 playoffs and lost to the Atlanta Hawks. During that series, Simmons' offensive issues took center stage as he attempted just three fourth-quarter field goals in the entire seven games. Most notably, he passed up a dunk in the final minutes of the team's Game 7 loss at home -- a play that typified Simmons' reluctance on the offensive end.

In his press conference after Game 7, Sixers head coach Doc Rivers told the media that he wasn't sure if Simmons was qualified to be a championship-level point guard. "I don't know the answer to that right now," Rivers said

Rivers' quote coupled with Simmons' poor performance ratcheted up the tension that had been building in Philadelphia for years about the fit, or lack thereof, between Simmons and Joel Embiid. While Simmons -- a three-time All-Star and two-time All-Defensive First Teamer -- has clear talents, they don't mesh well with Embiid, and his negative qualities are amplified in the postseason.

This isn't the first time Simmons has been in trade rumors, but the situation is much different than it was prior to last season, when he was the potential center piece of a James Harden blockbuster. Simmons' struggles in the postseason lowered his value, and his declaration that he won't attend training camp has eliminated almost all of the leverage the Sixers once had.

Recent reports indicated that the Sixers are looking for an All-Star player in return for Simmons, but so far have not been able to find a deal they like. That won't be any easier now that Simmons' demands have gone public. And if it's true that Simmons is trying to force his way to one of three teams in California, the Sixers' options are even more limited.

"Think about three months ago when the Sixers are willing to give up Ben Simmons. You are like, 'Let's see what we have to do to get him,'" a Western Conference executive told the Inquirer. "Now, the difference is Ben Simmons says he refuses to play for the Sixers. He wants to go to three California teams. There's so much bad blood between him and the team."

The Simmons experience in Philadelphia has never been perfect, but there was always a feeling that they were talented enough to succeed anyway. That hasn't happened for a whole host of reasons, many of them front-office mistakes unrelated to Simmons' own personal weaknesses.

Now, as Simmons tries to force his way out of town, the team faces arguably its most important decision since "The Process" began nearly a decade ago. Whatever happens, they can't afford to add this potential deal to the list of missteps that has led them here in the first place.

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick says Cam Newton's vaccination status had no factor in release - ESPN

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick said Cam Newton's vaccination status wasn't a factor in the team's decision to release him.

"No. Look, you guys keep talking about that," Belichick told reporters Wednesday morning.

"I would just point out that I don't know what the number is, but the number of players, coaches and staff members that have been infected by COVID in this training camp -- who have been vaccinated -- is a pretty high number. So I wouldn't lose sight of that."

The NFL previously announced that 68 players and staff tested positive for COVID-19 out of 7,190 tested individuals during a three-week stretch from Aug. 1-21. The rate of positive tests among unvaccinated NFL personnel was seven times higher than the rate of positive tests among vaccinated personnel, according to the league.

Newton was away from the Patriots for five days last week due to what the team called a COVID-19 protocol "misunderstanding." He missed three practices over that stretch, which allowed rookie Mac Jones to take control of the team.

The Patriots had disclosed that Newton had undergone daily testing at the time, all of which were negative. According to NFL-NFLPA protocols, Tier 1 and Tier 2 individuals -- including all players -- are exempt from daily testing if they have received the COVID-19 vaccine.

Newton had never confirmed his vaccination status, saying it was personal.

On Tuesday, Jaguars coach Urban Meyer said he and general manager Trent Baalke took a player's vaccination status into consideration during final roster cuts.

Meyer said that it was considered because of the more stringent COVID-19 protocols imposed on unvaccinated players who test positive or are identified as high-risk close contacts as compared with the protocols for vaccinated players.

Meyer's comments did not go over well with the NFL Players Association. George Atallah, the assistant executive director for external affairs for the NFLPA, told ESPN via email that Meyer's statements "have led us to open an investigation."

On Wednesday morning, the Jaguars released a statement saying that no players were released Tuesday because of their vaccination status.

Of the decision to go with Jones over Newton, Belichick called it a "very competitive situation."

"Both players took pretty close to an equal number of repetitions in total between practice, games, going all the way back to the spring," he said.

Of Newton's release, offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels said: " have a tremendous amount of respect for him as a player. A tremendous amount of respect for him as a human being. I think he did everything he could that we asked him to do to try to help us win and help us prepare this year to improve. And for that I'm very grateful and appreciative of all the things he did, all the work he put in."

WATCH: Shohei Ohtani steals home in Angels' win over Yankees - CBS Sports

The 2021 season for Angels superstar and MVP front-runner Shohei Ohtani has basically been an emphatic "no" to the question, "is there anything on a baseball field he can't do?" We can add another feat to the list after seeing what he pulled off in the bottom of the fifth inning Tuesday against the Yankees in a 6-4 win.

Ohtani stole home.

Now, as can be seen from the video footage, it's not a straight steal of home but instead a first-and-third play that is attempted every single time there are runners on first and third in Little League. The higher level we go, the tougher it is to pull off from the runner on third base. It's incredibly impressive for Ohtani to score on a play like this in the majors.

Just running back through everything he's doing this year is worthwhile, too, so we don't start to take for granted just how insane this is.

That was Ohtani's 21st stolen base of the season. He leads the majors in home runs with 42 and paces the AL in slugging percentage. He's also 8-1 with a 3.00 ERA on the mound, where he's struck out 127 hitters in 105 innings. It has seemed impossible for one player to do all this in a season for upwards of 100 years and he's doing it. Just try this sentence on for size: The best power hitter in baseball, who is also an All-Star-caliber pitcher, just stole home.

Amazing, right?

It's a shame the Angels aren't in playoff contention. Thanks in part to major injuries to Mike Trout and Anthony Rendon, they are mired in mediocrity. Thanks to Ohtani, though, they are one of the most fun teams in baseball to watch. See Exhibit ZZZ above for the latest evidence.

Angels' Shohei Ohtani Steals Home vs. Yankees - Sports Illustrated

Even when Shohei Ohtani is not throwing jaw-dropping pitches and rattling off home runs every night, the Angels star pitcher and designated hitter continues to leave his mark on the game.

On Tuesday, with the Angels up 5-2 against the Yankees in the bottom of the fifth, Yankees pitcher Joely Rodríguez struck out Angels infielder Jared Walsh. After striking out Walsh, Angels' Phil Gosselin manages to steal second base while Ohtani avoids being tagged out by Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez at home plate to secure the run.

Ohtani became the first Angels player to steal home since Francisco Arcia on Aug. 7, 2018. This was Arcia's only career steal.

The 26-year-old did not pitch in Tuesday's game because of soreness in his right hand after he was hit by a pitch by Padres' Ryan Weathers on Saturday. Ohtani leads the majors in home runs (42) and the American League in slugging percentage (.626).

At the mound, Ohtani is 8-1 with a 3.00 ERA and 127 strikeouts in 105 innings. The Angels (65-67) currently sit fourth in the AL West behind the Astros, the Athletics and the Mariners.

Giants practice squad projection, rules, tracker - Big Blue View

The next phase of roster construction begins today for the New York Giants and the other 31 NFL teams. The claiming deadline for players waived on Tuesday is 4 p.m. ET, so you can expect some roster shuffling as the Giants try to improve their depth.

Once the claiming period ends teams can begin signing players to their 16-man practice squads. Below, a look at the practice squad rules, a projection of players the Giants might add, and a tracker that will be updated as reports of signings come in.

Practice squad rules

  • Practice squads can include 16 players. The new CBA allowed for 12, up from the previous number of 10. Adjustments to roster caused by COVID-19 bumped that number to 16.
  • Six players on those practice squads can have unlimited NFL experience.
  • Practice squad salaries are $9,200 per week for players who have two or fewer accrued NFL seasons, and $14,000 per week for veterans with more than two accrued seasons.
  • Teams can protect four players on their practice squad each week. While protected, those players cannot be signed to active rosters by the league’s other 31 teams. The list of protected players can change each week.
  • Should players on the active roster test positive for COVID-19 the night before or morning of games, teams can promote an unlimited number of players from the practice squad to the active roster up to 90 minutes prior to kickoff.
  • Two practice squad players can be added to the active roster each week, bringing that roster to 55. Those players can be elevated without terminating a practice squad contract and signing an NFL player contract. Those players revert to the practice squad the day after the game without being subject to waivers.

Novak Djokovic thought he heard 'booing' at the US Open as he starts his pursuit of history -- or did he? - CNN

(CNN)Novak Djokovic started his pursuit of history at the US Open with victory against Holger Rune on Tuesday but said the atmosphere on court was far from ideal.

Organizers have welcomed capacity crowds back at Flushing Meadows this year -- with fans aged 12 and above requiring proof of vaccination -- but not all seemed to want the world No.1 to win.
Djokovic is bidding to become the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to win the calendar grand slam but said he thought he heard booing from the crowd as he survived a scare to win 6-1 6-7 6-2 6-1.
"I didn't know what they were chanting honestly. I thought they were booing," he told reporters after the match.
"I don't know, it was not ideal atmosphere for me to tell you that. But I've been in these particular atmospheres before, so I knew how to handle it.
"I mean, obviously you always wish to have crowd behind you, but it's not always possible.
"That's all I can say. I mean, I don't know. I've been focusing on myself and what I need to do. I guess I have to just see how it feels on the court and try to keep it together. That's all I can do."
It's unclear whether fans were booing the Serbian or whether they were chanting "Rune" in support of his Danish opponent.
Rune himself was confused by what he initially thought was booing but said he was happy when he realized many were just cheering on the underdog.
"Actually, at one point, they were cheering for me; another point, they were booing. I was like, 'What is going on?'" he told reporters.
"All of a sudden, after the match I heard they said 'Rune.' When I heard that, I was happy because I didn't understand it in the match. As I said, it was a crazy crowd, the best I've ever felt in my life."
Novak Djokovic said he thought he heard booing from the crowd in New York, but many were chanting "Rune" in support of his opponent.

'I am very excited'

Djokovic has already won the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon this year and needs just one more victory at the last slam of the year to complete the epic feat.
Triumph at the US Open would also take the 34-year-old to 21 major titles, surpassing Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal who each have 20 majors to their name.
"I am very excited and I'm very motivated, as you can imagine," he told CNN Sport ahead of the tournament. "I am very much aware of what's on the line."
"Making history in this sport is of the greatest importance to me, particularly at this stage of my career. And playing and trying to win as many grand slams is the highest priority in my tennis season."
The Serbian star had been bidding to become the first men's player to win a 'Golden Slam' -- consisting of four grand slams and an Olympic gold medal in the same calendar year -- but lost in the semifinals to eventual gold medalist Alexander Zverev at Tokyo 2020.
He said he had "ran out of gas" at the Summer Olympics but is raring to go again after a break.
"Pressure is a privilege. I have grown and kind of developed throughout my career to really handle pressure in the right way," he added. "But nothing is guaranteed.
"I like to have adversity. I like to have expectations and pressure and, you know, in a way it draws the best out of me. So, yeah, hopefully, I can have a fantastic couple of weeks."

Urban Meyer Says COVID-19 Vaccination Status Considered in Jags' Roster Cuts; NFLPA Investigates - Sports Illustrated

Urban Meyer commented during a press conference Tuesday that a player's COVID-19 vaccination status was taken into consideration for the Jaguars' roster cuts.

"Everyone was considered," Meyer said. "That was part of the [considerations such as] production, let's start talking about this, and also is he vaccinated or not? Can I say that that was a decision-maker? It was certainly in consideration."

Following Meyer's comments, the NFLPA launched an investigation into the matter, according to ProFootball Talk.

There's a significant difference in COVID-19 protocols between vaccinated and unvaccinated players. If deemed a high-risk close contact or test positive for the virus, an unvaccinated player would miss substantial time compared to a vaccinated player.

SI Recommends

Per a report from the NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, fully vaccinated players and staff members will be tested every week while unvaccinated players will reportedly be required to take a COVID-19 test every day at the club facility.

If a vaccinated player tests positive, they are required to be out for 10 days unless they receive two negative PCR tests separated by 24 hours. Meanwhile, positive unvaccinated players must be out for 10 days and face a three-day return-to-play protocol.

The league did not update its COVID-19 close-contact protocols, per Pelissero. Fully vaccinated individuals will not be designated high-risk close contacts, but unvaccinated must test immediately. Even if they return a negative test, they will miss five days.
